Lauren Clarke Jensen on holidays by the ocean

Lauren Clarke Jensen currently live in New York City with the sought- after role as a publicist at Karla Otto, one of the biggest fashion PR companies in the world. Having a CV most girls could only dream of, it is hard to believe Lauren have had time to even see the beach throughout her career. However you can´t take the Australian beach girl out of even the most ambitious boss lady. Still you will find her in the European fashion capitals during the various fashion weeks, there is no doubt she will be jetting off to a place where her skins gets darker and hair lighter as soon as her schedule allows it. Biarritz in France is one of these places.

What role does the ocean & the beach play in your life?

The ocean and beach are my lifelines!  Born and raised in Sydney I grew up with Bondi Beach practically in my back yard.  There was rarely a weekend growing up that we didn’t head to the beach – Bondi, Coogee, Manly… near the most breathtaking beaches in the world it’s hard not become obsessively connected to it. There is nothing better than salty skin and hair and a warm bronzed beach glow. Once I moved to the United States I wound up moving to Miami for my University years.

Where is your favourite beach destination?

It’s not possible for me to choose just one destination!  Aside from Australia, I love the surfing paradise of Uluwatu in Bali and the breathtaking islands of The Maldives. Visiting Hikkaduwa Beach in Sri Lanka every few years has become a Clarke family tradition. Florianópolis in Brazil – is heaven.  And anywhere in the south of France or the Greek Islands I could go back to a thousand times.  But one of my favorite beach spots is Biarritz, which seems to have gone through a bit of a revival in recent years.  What I love about Biarritz is that it combines an equal mix of beach and surf, the chicest shopping and fresh, healthy French cuisine unique to the Basque region. The town is lined with beautifully curated independent boutiques – think French chic meets neoprene – a place to buy hand-made espadrilles, demure maillots, artfully decorated French market bags and custom surf boards and wetsuits. When not shopping the surf calls, Biarritz is one of the best places in Europe to surf.

Best coffee or tea?

Miremont is a beautiful tea shop, once the spot for European royals.

Best shopping?

At Art of Soule you can find any color of hand-made espadrille.  I love of course nautical stripes – when in France!

Best healthy eats?

Grilled sardines served right down on the rocks in the early evening. There’s a little place where you just order the daily specials off a blackboard.

Best sundowners?

One of the chicest spots  — Apero gin and tonics are the favorite here and Beach House in the neighboring town Anglet.  I also love a no frills surf hangout called Le Surf, right on the beachfront, and Eden Rock Café.

Best exercise here either you prefer a class, walk or run?

Hands down…surfing! If I am in the same destination I always look into a pilates or yoga class for a bit of Zen time while on holiday.

Chicest place to stay here?

There are tons of little bed and breakfast style hotels. A really cute budget friendly option with light filled rooms is Maison du Lierre.

Must see/do?

Surf, shop and dine on delicious fresh seafood

What do you always pack in your beach bag?

A sarong – my favorite was picked up in St. Tropez at Le Club 55’s little boutique (a beach and shopping lover’s dream shop), a lazy beach read and SPF!

Beauty routine before and after the beach?

A few years ago I was living in Asia so really got into the luxury world of beauty trying face masks, night creams and tonics from a variety of ultra-luxury brands.  Working for a fashion magazine I was flown by brands to beauty launches all around the world and it was easy to get caught up in the glamour of it all, but since moving back to New York I’ve converted almost completely to clean beauty products free of chemicals. A friend of mine from work introduced me to where they have something called The Never List which tells you what ingredients to look out for when shopping for beauty products.

My routine on holiday is very simple…..

Before the beach all that’s required is a natural sunscreen from Beauty Counter – I like Protect All Over Sunscreen SPF 30 . After the beach its RMS Buriti Bronzer and a light tinted moisturizer.  I recently started using Juice Beauty Flawless Serum Foundation. I buy both from a place in NYC called Credo – a boutique whose mantra is “Totally clean. Super good. Absolutely beautiful”.  The bronzer gives you a beach glow without the need to scorch skin with harmful rays from the sun. Salt spray for the hair – I recently switched from Bumble & Bumble to support a cool, local NYC brand called R+Co – I love R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray – Named after Brooklyn’s Rockaway Beach. They have these cute travel sets which is basically all you need for your holiday. Ever since I saw it in a boutique in Bali, I can’t resist the packaging of Swedish Dream Sea Salt Soap.  I moved back to the US shortly after to see it stocked everywhere. I buy mine from a NYC favorite beauty spot Bigelow Chemists in the West Village.

How do you keep fit on holidays?

Beach runs, surfing, swimming. And I like to look into local classes – usually pilates or yoga to get into the Zen holiday vibe.

Your beach uniform ?

I find that my mood is dictated by location. When in Biarritz it might err on the side of Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin in La Piscine, so Saint James stripes, espadrilles and a big market basket. I picked up an amazing pompom trimmed basket with a star spray-painted onto it in Fuschia pink from Toko Emporium in the trendy Seminyak Beach in Bali.  It’s been my favorite beach bag since. I love swimwear from We Are Handsome and for any beach lover their Instagram is a must-follow. If I’m at the beach in a place like Goa or somewhere in Sri Lanka or Indonesia it’s all about the kaftan and gold hand-made sandals. I have the chicest kaftans in the world from a boutique in Mumbai called Ahilaya and I’ll usually pick up local market sandals from the destination I’m in to complete the look.

What is your favorite part of an ultimate beach day?

In Biarritz it consists of an early morning swim so no need to shower, salty beach hair instantly improves one’s appearance. Swimsuit, beach blanket and a sarong is all one needs on a holiday like this. Next is a yoga class, preferably overlooking the ocean, followed by a late morning breakfast. Then shopping, shopping, shopping. I’ve never met a local market I didn’t like.  Finally back to the sand once more followed by Apres-beach drinks and dinner at a local French café.

Lisa Clayton exercising on holidays in Australia

Years of living in Singapore as an Australian expat has not taken the Aussie out of Lisa Clayton, the Founder and Director of Ufit Bootcamps the largest and most popular bootcamp and fitness family in Southeast Asia. Her wanderlust, active and outdoorsy lifestyle is evident through her inspiring instagram account @lisaclayton77. If you are lucky enough to be in Singapore at any stage, a class with Lisa is essential. And if you get hooked (most likely) she also runs a girls retreat in Bali a few times a year; packed with exercise, healthy eats, beach hangs, shopping, pampering, laughter and sundowners. If you heading to Australia anytime soon The Beach Seekers got insiders on Lisa´s favourite Sydney beach and it is not Bondi..

What role does the ocean & the beach play in your life?

Ah, the beach, the ocean, is there anything better? There’s just no place quite as relaxing, beautiful or pleasant in the summer, and no place that combines the simple pleasures like nature and sunshine in a busy life. The beach helps me recharge. If I’m alone! With the kids it could be a different outcome but none the less, we as a family usually always enjoy fun in the sun, just bring home way more sand!

Where is your favourite beach destination?

Balmoral in Sydney is a hive of everything water related, to amazing food. The beaches boast beautiful white sand and the scenery is stunning. Boats, the Harbour and headland view its great for kids and adults.

Where will we find the best coffee here?

The Boathouse Balmoral

Best shopping?

Military Road is full of shops! Starting from Raglan St all the way up to the main road it’s a good 2k of shopping from clothes, furniture and home wares.

Best healthy eats?

Pasta Zu, an amazing range of salads, there is a small sushi eatery on Vista St, Awaba St Cafe and who could forget the iconic The Boathouse for dining on the water.

Best sundowners?

Private dining room

Best exercise here either you prefer a class, walk or run?

Run. A great set of stairs goes up to Chowder Bay and a bush track takes you back. A gorgeous walk or run with stops to see the Harbour.

Chicest place to stay?

I don’t know any hotels actually but AirBnB has many places for rent.

Must see and do?

Taronga Zoo, the rock pools, visit Chowder Bay and take a drive to Manly.

What do you always pack in your beach bag?

Sunscreen (I use a different one to the boys) 30+ SPF coconut smelling Le tanOriginal & Mineral Know Knott Conditioning Detangler (as my hair gets into a right old mess), sunnies, Summer Moments turkish towels and water.

How do you keep fit on your holidays?

It’s a mixture of runs, I enjoy running around new places, visiting boutique studios for a strength class, or joining in on an outdoor fitness class.

Your beach uniform?

Rip curl bikinis, Zimmerman bikinis, Fella swim, Vamastyle, Havaianas, a pair off short denim shorts and a basic white singlet with a t-back.

What is your favorite part of an ultimate beach day?

Walking away warm, tanned, nourished. Getting out in the fresh air and getting in the clean water is just exhilarating. It makes you feel better. You are getting good, clean, fresh air right off the ocean. I can move. I can do anything I want in the water. It’s comfortable. Watching the boys boogie board and swim for hours on end, and see that they got my outdoorsy love makes me a proud mummy.
